August 18th is said to be Rice Day.
The illustration shows a cockatiel holding a rice tub with the brightest smile.
“Hohohoho… They don’t call it ginshari (shiny white rice) for nothing! Each grain is sparkling… ✨”
These days, even filling up a whole rice tub feels like a luxury.
Long ago, white rice was considered a rare treat that ordinary people could hardly afford.
Perhaps things are starting to feel the same way again.
I created this piece with a wooden fish drum and bells, to capture the warm, pon-pon sound of rice being cooked.

Rice is very hard to grow—so we really should treasure each and every grain 👀
